Alberto Giacometti: Toward the Ultimate Figure

Sale price $24.95 Regular price $50.00

Alberto Giacometti first traveled to the United States in 1965, three months before his death in 1966. Nevertheless, early in his career he had received recognition in the country, having been exhibited in the 1930s at the Museum of Modern Art. In the 1950s, the artist enjoyed retrospectives in some of the era’s leading American museums and his work became part of notable private collections. In that respect, Giacometti can be considered an important figure in the history of modern art in the United States.

Since the 1970s, there have been few retrospectives dedicated to the artist in the United States, especially outside New York.  Alberto Giacometti: Toward the Ultimate Figure gathers more than sixty iconic works and around fifty photographs from the Fondation Giacometti’s collection, mainly pieces that had been retained by the artist. Focused on the last twenty years of his life and practice, this exhibition gives the public the chance to discover an ever-evolving creative practice: Giacometti’s relentless quest for the essential form.
