Georgia O'Keeffe: Abstract Variations

Georgia O'Keeffe: Abstract Variations

Regular price $14.95

Georgia O’Keeffe is one of America’s best known and most beloved artists. Famously associated with the landscape of the American West, she is celebrated for her high-desert panoramas and her close readings of flowers. Early in her career, however, she devoted her practice almost exclusively to abstraction, and developed a visual vocabulary of lines, curves, undulating fields, and ultimately hints of natural phenomena that form the basis for her more figural works.

This catalogue from our 2020 exhibition Georgia O'Keeffe: Abstract Variations maps O’Keeffe’s progress as she refined her formal strategies and, through abstraction, devised novel schemes and methods for responding to nature. At its center is Music, Pink and Blue, No. 1 (1918), O’Keeffe’s first major oil painting and a recent addition to the Seattle Art Museum’s collection, here positioned as the culmination of the artist’s journey from student to teacher to independent creator, and the first complete expression of her personal brand of modernism.
