Isamu Noguchi Chess Set and Board

Regular price $450.00

Of the many chess set designs made by major 20th century Modern artists, few were as innovative and deeply rooted in tradition as the Chess Set and Table ensemble created by Japanese – American sculptor Isamu Noguchi.  It was designed in 1944 during a time of scarcity of materials. Noguchi settled on plexiglass which was a new and experimental material used by the military.

Each piece is a mini sculpture and became prototypes for later work. He chose red and green inspired by his interest in Indian culture. Classic Indian chess sets have red and green pieces, often rubies and emeralds.

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was one of the twentieth century’s notable and critically acclaimed sculptors. Through a lifetime of artistic experimentation, he created sculptures, gardens, furniture and lighting designs, ceramics, architecture, landscapes, and set designs.
